In this project I was contracted to create a dreamy children's book about two brothers as they explore their dreams.
Character Designs
The main characters are based on the authors children and it turns out they love wearing hats! The brothers were drawn in many different outfits to suit the various roles the find themselves in.
Drawing Process
The story follows the children’s dreams as they explore fun activities all around the world and in outer space. 16 illustrations were created.
I used Kyle’s drawing box - Charcoal champ 1 for the main brush. I liked the rough outline effect it created and felt it suited the illustrations.
Color Development
To capture the dreamy illustrations in full colour, I wanted the texture/style to be cloudy and vibrant. The brush I selected was Kyle's Real Watercolor - Gaint 500. And the colour pallet was selected based on bright yet slightly washed-out colours.
Book layout
I wanted there to be a harmonious relationship between the images and the text on the adjacent side, so I created a cloudy vine boarder for each of the pages.
We had to try a few variations of fonts to select the one that suited the book just right!
Eventually we settled on 'Mystery quest' font which looked amazing!
I used a light background colour for the pages containing text, using a harmonious colour from the pantone selected.
